Dopo il successo del primo album “Music of the Sun” e del secondo “A Girl like Me”, la bella cantante delle Barbados cambia decisamente rotta e lo fa con la supervisione di Jay-Z per il nuovo lavoro “Good Girl Gone Bad”.
Scoperta giovanissima dal produttore Evan Rogers, Rihanna si trasferisce a New York all’età di soli quindici anni. È ancora una ragazzina quando firma un contratto con la Def Jam per ben sei album e quando il suo primo singolo Pon De Replay la fa volare in vetta alle classifiche di mezzo mondo. I produttori pensano per il suo primo album, Music of the Sun, a un sound nuovo e giovane basato sulla regolarità dell’r’n’b ma impreziosito di beat dance e caraibici. Per il suo secondo lavoro, A Girl like Me, fatta eccezione per il primo singolo SOS, le sonorità si fanno più delicate, più romantiche e di conseguenza meno accattivanti e meno innovative.
La svolta decisa, però, arriva con il tocco del famoso rapper e produttore Jay-Z che accetta di collaborare al terzo album della cantante, dal provocatorio titolo Good Girl Gone Bad, dove Rihanna decide di cambiare tendenza e non solo dal punto di vista musicale. Lavorare con alcuni dei più importanti e influenti produttori di “musica black” significa, infatti, affidarsi completamente a loro: dalla musica all’immagine. I cambiamenti sono spesso vincenti, basti pensare alle rivoluzioni di Nelly Furtado o Justin Timberlake nelle mani di Timbaland.
Il primo singolo estratto dal nuovo album di Rihanna è Umbrella che contiene una inconfondibile intro di Jay-Z, anche se il brano è indubbiamente più vicino al genere pop che all’r’n’b. Si continua poi con Push up on Me e Don’t Stop the Music, due brani ballabili scanditi da sonorità dance molto vicine a quelle degli anni Novanta. Più “sintetizzata”, invece, Breakin’ Dishes in cui Rihanna afferma tutta la sua ritrovata sicurezza e il suo totale controllo su se stessa. Decisamente più simile alle sonorità del suo secondo album la dolce Say It, in cui la musica lascia più spazio alla voce e ai cori.
Il tocco di Timbaland (come produttore) è riconoscibile in Lemme Get That dove Rihanna ha la possibilità di abbozzare un rap. Sempre sotto la super visione di Timbaland anche Rehab, brano che ricorda quelli inclusi in FutureSexx/LoveSounds di Justin Timberlake, proprio lui, infatti, presta ai cori la sua voce e ha messo lo zampino nella produzione della canzone.
Good Girl Gone Bad si rivela essere un lavoro ben curato sin nei minimi particolari e non poteva essere altrimenti visto i nomi dei produttori che ne hanno seguito la realizzazione. Rihanna dimostra, ancora una volta, che i cambiamenti musicali devono essere ben supportati se vogliono ottenere il giusto riconoscimento e soprattutto che bisogna scegliere di collaborare con chi la musica la conosce bene, o meglio, conosce ciò che può piacere all’ascoltatore.
