La regina del pop (Madonna) ci ha regalato un album completamente dance, ambientando il tutto negli anni ’80. L’attuale principessina del pop (l’Aguilera) è tornata alle “origini” per rendere la sua musica più originale. Il principino del pop italiano (Ferro) ha sfornato un singolo insaporito dell’elettronica anni ‘80 e nelle radio imperversa il gay-pop (Scissor Sisters) ancora anni ’80. E per ultimo, non per importanza, arriva anche il re del pop (Robbie) che non perde l’onda di successo che arriva direttamente dagli scorsi decenni musicali e si cimenta anche lui con vari gusti, stili e generi un po’ retrò. Che la musica pop targata anni duemila non sappia dove andare?
Rudebox, preceduto dal singolo omonimo, che in patria ha deluso le aspettative non posizionandosi in testa alle classifiche, è un contenitore di generi musicali reinterpretati con una buona dose di originalità dall’ex Take That: electro-pop, dance eighties and nineties, breakdance, cover, rap, hip hop, funk, dediche, collaborazioni eccellenti (Pet Shop Boys e William Orbit), e chi ne più ne metta.
Ci sono troppi ingredienti nel lavoro, e forse le diciassette tracce (sedici più una ghost track) ne sono la relativa conferma. Nonostante questa prolifica ibridazione, sembra che Robbie ci creda veramente tanto in questo suo ultimo lavoro, e quasi quasi, ascolto dopo ascolto anche il consumatore di questo “prodotto” si autoconvince. Che Robbie sia sfacciatamente coraggioso nella sua produzione musicale è indubbio, ma in questo cd questo coraggio sembra avere più forze, stranamente. È strano infatti che proprio in un lavoro fatto di cover e di canzoni old style questa caratteristica vanga fuori.
Rudebox ha un suo perché. Le sonorità sono ben curate e l’atmosfera, che è alla base dell’idea dell’album, si percepisce facilmente all’ascolto: obiettivo raggiunto. Il secondo singolo Lovelight, cover di Lewis Taylor, sta già scalando le classifiche degli airplay radiofonici, forte del suo sound dolcemente dance e pop. Altre sono le cover come Louise degli Human League, Kiss me di Stephen Duffy e Bongo Bong – Je ne t’aime plus di Manu Chao. Quest’ultima nella nuova versione, dove troviamo la voce di Lilly Allen, riesce a non rovinare l’originale dandogli con i suoni delle tastiere elettroniche e la base ritmica rubata alle hit anni ottanta una nuova vita.
Robbie non dimentica la sua regina e le dedica un’intera canzone ben riuscita, She’s Madonna. Poi vuole diventare un nuovo componente dei Pet Shop Boys cantando We’re the Pet Shop Boys e si diverte a danzare a ritmo di musica country (sempre macchiata dall’immancabile elettronica) in Viva Life on Mars e Kiss me. Canta a ritmo di rap nella divertentissima Good Doctor, ironica nella sua lunga lista di medicine che Robbie prendeva, prende, continuerà a prendere. In puro stile “robbie”, invece, è Summertime che sicuramente diventerà il brano più amato di questo album dei vecchi fan, che non dovranno sforzarsi per ritrovare in quella base e in quella melodia semplice e nello stesso profonda eseguita dalla voce inconfondibile, ormai, di Robbie Williams.
Ultima curiosità su uno dei brani che forse rappresentano l’anima e l’idea di fondo di questa produzione musicale, “The 80’s” e “The 90’s”, omaggi al passato, che è al centro di un simpatico concorso “Create il video di The 80s”.
